Zenker Appeal

Supporting the National Centre of Flexible Endoscopic Treatment of Zenker’s Diverticulum.

The Zenker Appeal supports a national specialist service treating Zenker’s diverticulum, a rare condition affecting swallowing and quality of life. Donations help deliver innovative day-case treatment, improving patient care beyond NHS funding.

Zenker’s diverticulum (also known as a pharyngeal pouch) is a rare but distressing condition in which a pouch forms at the top of the oesophagus (food pipe). This happens due to muscle spasm at the entrance of the gullet and can cause difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of food, coughing, weight loss, and a significant reduction in quality of life.

In 2013, our teams introduced a pioneering flexible endoscopic procedure to treat Zenker’s diverticulum in the UK. Our centre now acts as a national referral service, caring for patients from across the country. This innovative treatment allows most patients to be treated as a day case, avoiding major surgery and enabling faster recovery.

Your generosity will help us:

  • Continue delivering this specialist, life-changing treatment
  • Support training and development of our expert nursing and clinical teams
  • Improve patient care, assessment, and outcomes
  • Advance research and innovation for this rare condition

Suggested donations:

  • £10 – helps support patient care and essential equipment
  • £50 – contributes to specialist training and service development
  • £100 – supports innovation, research, and national referral services

Every donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference to patients living with Zenker’s diverticulum. Thank you for supporting the Zenker Appeal and helping us change lives.

Care Package Appeal

With your support, we can provide essential care packages filled with comfort, warmth and hope, small gestures that make a meaningful difference in someone’s day.

Patients often arrive in our Emergency Department and short-stay areas unexpectedly, without the basic items they need. Our care package appeal is designed to provide comfort, dignity and reassurance at what can be a very difficult time, helping to ease the burden and give patients one less thing to worry about.

We are inviting donations of new items, ideally prepared in ready-made bags for men and women, so they can be given out quickly to those in need.

Suggested items include:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, body wipes
  • Sanitary products (for women’s packs)
  • New lounge wear, underwear, socks, slippers
  • Puzzle books, magazines, books
  • Wrapped dry food items

These small, thoughtful items can make a big difference, helping patients feel more comfortable, cared for and supported.

If you would like to physically donate, you can do so by dropping off the items directly at Russells Hall Hospital at the main entrance, between Monday – Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm. If you would like to donate online, you can do so by clicking here.

Thank you for helping us provide kindness when it matters most.

Baby Bereavement Campaign

We want to improve the facilities and provide a calm, safe and supportive environment for families going through heartbreak. Please support those affected by the death of a baby.

The baby bereavement service at Russells Hall Hospital has 98 trained midwives and 50 community health visitors caring for bereaved families.

This year alone the department has cared for over 60 mothers and their babies in the specialised bereavement suite, and the team have also provided care for over 20 mothers and their families experiencing early pregnancy losses on ward B5.
The bereavement team, which includes the chaplaincy team, have conducted funerals for 121 babies so far.

Each year, the team host a special Walk of Hope event at Mary Stevens Park where over 150 families attend to honour their babies.

Mobile Sensory Trolley Campaign

The Dudley Group NHS Charity is raising funds for a much needed mobile sensory trolley for the children’s ward at Russells Hall Hospital.

Your donation can help fund

We are reaching out to you with a heartfelt appeal to support the C2, Children’s Ward at Russells Hall Hospital. The ward is a vital part of our healthcare system dedicated to providing compassionate care and treatment for children of Dudley.

Our goal is to raise funds to purchase a much needed mobile sensory trolley for our young patients who have special needs, autism and sensory processing difficulties. It also helps anxious children before surgery and those who are too poorly to play in the ward’s playroom.

The mobile sensory trolley is a uniquely portable kaleidoscope of colour, sound, and touch, it is jam-packed with stimulating sensory potential. It’s portable, practical, and a perfect space-saving sensory aid; it can be wheeled between classrooms and through wards whilst creating a warm sensory glow.

By contributing to our campaign, you will help us purchase a vital piece of equipment for our young patients to enjoy.

Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant impact.

Cancer Appeal

We want to care for the patient and their family. Dealing with cancer, can be very distressing for everyone. It is vital to provide as much comfort and care as possible.

Our Cancer Appeal supports the Georgina Ward and the Georgina Day Case Unit, both on C4 at Russells Hall Hospital.

The Day Case Unit is a modern fully equipped area with 12 treatment chairs and two triage spaces, and the ward consists of 22 inpatient beds for oncology, haematology, and rheumatology patients, six of which are in custom built isolation rooms.

Dealing with cancer, for both the patient and their family, can be very distressing.  It is vital to our charity that we add as much comfort for our cancer patients as possible, encompassing the wellbeing of patients, families, and carers.

Thanks to your donations so far, we have installed sky lights in patient areas to help alleviate stress and provide positive distraction. Cold caps were also purchased. The cooling effect of these help to reduce blood flow to the scalp – thus reducing the amount of chemotherapy medication reaching the scalp – which will help to prevent hair loss.

Children's Appeal

We want to make it better for our younger patients. Hospitals can be a scary place, especially for children. Our charity wants to enhance the experience for them and their families, by providing a comfortable, reassuring base for their care and treatment.

The children’s services across Russells Hall Hospital, outpatient and community centres treat over 23,000 children each year from birth to 16 years old.

The children’s appeal was created to help support our young patients with a range of conditions and illnesses, during their treatment. It can be a daunting and scary time for our young patients whether they’re attending an appointment, staying for a prolonged period on our wards or undergoing surgery, and we want their time within our services to be as comfortable and engaging as possible.

The funds raised will help to provide children with resources and activities to distract and offer play therapy, whether they’re an inpatient on the ward or visiting our outpatient departments.

Our charity endeavours to do this by supporting projects that can make a real difference to children and young people in hospital.

Dementia Appeal

Treating our patients with dignity and the utmost respect is essential. A person with dementia needs to feel respected and valued for who they are now, as well as for who they were in the past. There are so many things that we can do to help, and our aim is to raise awareness as well as funds.

The Dementia Appeal supports the Forget-Me-Not Unit (FMNU) on Ward C3 and the Frailty Assessment Unit on Ward B6 at Russells Hall Hospital.

The FMNU provides specialist care for people with dementia, or at risk of dementia with additional care needs.
A diagnosis of dementia is life changing for the patient, their family, and friends. But the diagnosis does not mean that life is over, simply different. With preparation and understanding you can face the challenges head on.

Caring for a loved one with dementia offers rewards as well as challenges. It is important to remember that the person you love is still there and accepting that change is inevitable will help you move forward. No one needs to cope with dementia alone; support for carers is a vital link to the wellbeing of dementia sufferers.
